SARAH ELLIOTT FINE ART AND TATTOO
The imagery of Sarah Elliott Tattoo occupies a space between folklore, memory, and romantic illustration. It draws upon a visual language shaped by artists such as Arthur Rackham, Alphonse Mucha, and John William Waterhouse. Within this tradition, nature, narrative, and emotion are closely intertwined. In keeping with the sensibility of nineteenth century Romanticism, the natural world is not treated simply as a setting. Instead it becomes a symbolic landscape in which meaning gathers through botanical forms, animals, and human gesture.
Figures appear within these quiet narrative moments. Women are crowned with orchids or entwined vines. Animals move beside them. Mirrors and talismanic objects suggest subtle ritual significance. The resulting sketches function as small narrative fragments rather than closed illustrations. They leave space for interpretation and personal meaning.
The feminine figure appears frequently within this work. She rarely appears as a passive subject. Instead she is presented as an ambiguous and symbolic presence. She is associated with intuition, transformation, and the cycles of the natural world. Her adornments carry layered meanings. Orchids suggest rare or resilient beauty. Mirrors allude to introspection and hidden interior worlds. In this context the feminine operates less as portraiture and more as archetype.
Animals move through these compositions as companions rather than decoration. Hounds appear repeatedly as attentive and watchful figures. They often stand at the edges of the image. Within European folklore and myth, dogs are associated with loyalty, guardianship, and the boundary between worlds. In these works they perform a similar symbolic role. They appear as protectors, familiars, and witnesses to the unseen dimensions suggested within the imagery.
Together these elements form a body of work that is both intimate and mythic.
Sarah’s work is printed on high quality, archival papers that are all thoughtfully chosen to reference classical storybook illustration.
She tattoos out of a private studio in Brisbane/Meanjin.
